On January 4th, 1864 The London and Colonial Bank Ltd. had its office at the corner of Port Royal and Duke Street Kingston with agencies in Lucea and a few other towns in Jamaica. Under the Management of Adolphe Philipson, the bank had shortly before been organized in London by substantial interest when it became apparent that the days of the Bank of Jamaica were numbered.

The Chairman of the new bank was Thomas H. Gladstone who established other branches of this bank in Trinidad, Barbados and other neighboring colonies hence the reason for "Jamaica Branch" as seen on the top of this note. This Bank failed to secure a Charter of Incorporation from the Jamaican Government and the bank ceased operation by the end of April 1865.   

 

This note is unissued as issued notes have the manual signature of the Manager and accountant and the serial number logged on record.

A side interest is that Adolphe Philipson was a Jamaican and the grandfather of William Arthur Orrett, a well known Police Officer here and who later became the Commissioner of Police in British Guiana.
